Aspire is a role model incentive initiative of the Perth Wildcats designed to improve literacy, numeracy and truancy in low socioeconomic status (SES) primary schools in the Perth metropolitan region.
The program involves players from the Perth Wildcats investing an extended period of time in the classroom, assisting the students with their learning over 12 school visits over six consecutive weeks.
Up to 50 students are chosen to participate in the program.
Players are provided with specific tasks by the teacher to assist with lesson plans, with particular focus on literacy and numeracy.
At the conclusion of the six weeks, a special event is held at the school in which five Perth Wildcats players take on the school’s chosen representative basketball team. This event aims to be a fun and memorable occasion for the entire school and replicates all the fun and excitement of a Perth Wildcats game day, including player introductions, crowd chants, courtside MC, music and giveaways.
Following the classroom interactive sessions, the Perth Wildcats partner with the school to provide incentives to underperforming students as rewards for achieving desired outcomes.
The program has seen some outstanding results with one student increasing their attendance from 63% prior to the program to 96% attendance at the completion of the program.
